Thank you for all your positive comments concerning the OSC’s new look. We are hoping to incorporate a ‘success stories’ page into the site and we would welcome your stories and before and after photographs. We are also keen for our members to share their knowledge of recipes that are tasty and low calorie or products that work for you. E Mail these to us and we will include them in the weekly reviews.

Thyroid Problems

Many of us blame our weight problems on an underactive thyroid problem. However, in reality only two percent of women actually have this problem with another two percent having an overactive thyroid.

Some of the symptoms to look out for in an underactive thyroid include:

• A gradual increase in your weight without being aware of eating more.
• Looking puffy in your face and hands
• Loss of libido
• Feeling lethargic
• Becoming forgetful
• Feeling depressed
• Heavier periods than usual
• Infertility.

Some of the symptoms of an overactive thyroid gland include:

• Frequent mood swings
• Feeling hungry, eating lots but still losing weight.
• Shaky hands
• Irregular periods
• Increased sex drive
• Difficulty in sitting still
• Talking too much

If you think you may have problems with your thyroid, you should consult your doctor. More information can be found at www.british-thyroid-association.org.

Confidence Boosters

It is easy to feel low when you are battling with a weight problem; however there are ways of boosting your self esteem and building your confidence, so that you can fight another day. Try these:

1. Look in the mirror and pick out your three best features. Stop concentrating on the negatives.
2. Make an effort to walk tall, holding your tummy in and pulling your shoulders back.
3. Realise that even the smallest skill is a talent. Don’t belittle yourself.
4. Show off your good points and make others envious!
5. Stick your favourite picture of yourself on the fridge and remind yourself that you are gorgeous.
6. Use positive language about yourself. If you keep saying ‘I’m fat, hopeless, thick etc, others will start to believe it.
7. Try saying NO. Far from upsetting the person, you are more likely to be respected for your decision. Try it.
8. Try not to get into the habit of ‘slobbing out’. Wearing clothes that you feel nice in will have the knock on effect of making you feel better.
